ABOUT MALT

Marin Agricultural Land Trust is a nonprofit land trust created in 1980 by a coalition of ranchers and environmentalists to permanently protect Marin County farmland. Some of the Bay Area’s most highly acclaimed dairy and cheese products, grass-fed meats and organic crops are produced on farmland protected by MALT’s 91 agricultural conservation easements. MALT has permanently protected over 54,000 acres of West Marin’s diverse mosaic of coastal grasslands, oak woodlands, rangelands and pastoral open space. MALT is committed to supporting sustainable management, climate-beneficial and regenerative agriculture in Marin County, including farming and grazing practices that rebuild soil organic matter and improve soil biodiversity to draw down carbon and improve the water cycle.

THE POSITION

A Sustainable Management Program Manager to support innovative research and scaling of climate-smart practices on agricultural easements in West Marin. The Sustainable Management Program manager is a 12-month fixed-term exempt position responsible for coordinating and reporting on projects for MALT’s science, and regenerative agriculture program. The position will provide the metrics and coordination needed to support a thriving and sustainable agricultural economy on MALT protected farming and ranching operations. The position will work under the direction of the Director of Science and Regenerative Agriculture.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND FUNCTIONS

• Oversee the tracking and reporting of research projects conducted by MALT Labs and associated Research and Fellowship program.
• Provide data analysis and reporting to support decision-making and outreach for the Science Advisory Board, Marketing and Communications, and Donor Development programs.
• Conduct field data collection, analysis, and reporting of farming and ranching activities including tracking of carbon farm planning and implementation.
• Maintain and report key performance indicators of the science and regenerative agriculture program.
• Meet with stakeholders to monitor program status and goals.
• Partner with the Stewardship and Conservation teams to document and report farming and ranching activities on easements.
• Analyze the impact of practices funded under the Stewardship Assistance and Drought Resilience and Water Security Programs.
• Other duties as assigned.

Education

Graduate degree in agroecology, rangeland management, environmental science, agricultural science, or related field.

Experience

Minimum of 2 years of experience implementing agricultural conservation projects, or an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job.

Knowledge and Abilities

• Strong analytical and data management skills with experience using spreadsheets, relational database, presentation, GIS, and related software applications.
• Deep science-based appreciation of the relationships between climate change, agriculture, and economically viable farming systems.
• Interest in developing and testing innovative technologies and practices that foster climate-smart agriculture.
• Good written and verbal communication skills.
• You have a strong commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion.

TERMS

This is a temporary, exempt position and the expected date is 12 months from hire, which requires some presence in MALT’s office in Point Reyes Station and in the West Marin community. Competitive salary in the $70K range and excellent benefits.
